Street Protest, Toronto
Street protests are a feature of life in a big city. The group that was protesting Congolese politics was much better behaved than the G20 protestors - at least while they were walking down Queen Street.

Candle in Dorm Room
Many years ago, decades ago even, I was a young student living away from home for the very first time. Because I was by nature a shy and retiring sort, I spent my evenings studying my text books or reading one of the numerous interesting volumes I found whilst exploring the stacks of the university library.
When 9:00 rolled around, I closed the books for an hour so that I could listen to Ideas on the CBC. I'd light a candle, extinguish the fluorescent lights, and lose myself for an hour in a world of new discoveries. At the end of the hours, I'd blow out the candle, turn on my lights, and resume my studies.
I miss those days sometime.

Over the Top
Today is Remembrance Day. Each time I attend the cenotaph ceremonies, my mind thinks of two things: my former neighbour Al, who served in the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II, and the 600,000 Canadians who served in the Great War.

A Matter of Perspective
I know it is no great discovery, but sometimes our ability to see things is hindered by where we stand. Take the following case, for example.
I have been going for lunch hour walks for over a year, and one of my regular routes takes me down Dundas Street through Chinatown. This is what I normally see:
A little while ago, I varied from my routine and walked on the north side of the street. Because I was not not looking straight ahead, I noticed things I had never seen before:

In particular, I noticed the moose above the restaurant sign. As you can tell, the moose is rather large, yet it never registered until I looked at it from across the street. Now that I know it's there, I can hardly believe that I never noticed it. After all, it's not exactly hiding in the woods:
I suppose I shouldn't feel too bad -- the moose seems admirably camouflaged to hide in Chinatown.

P.A.G.P.
R.I.P.
1935-2011
This is one of my favourite photographs of my father. I know it's not a particularly good photo, but it was a fun day. Whenever I see it, I remember him wandering around the fairgrounds and watching the work horses. For a few brief minutes, it was as if he'd been transported back to the early '40s when he was a boy on a farm in south-eastern Saskatchewan.
I'll miss him.

North York Ginza - Way Cool Tattoos
I am a sucker for neon lights. I know it's tacky and garish, but I find myself drawn to neon signs like iron filings are drawn to a magnet. God help me if I ever make it to Vegas or Tokyo. Who knows how many photographs I would take?

And So It Begins Again
I feel like blogging again. Or rather, I feel like posting pictures once in a while. I'm not sure it's the same thing. I don't know why I have this need to foist my ideas on the world, but I do.
World: you have been warned!
