Street protests are a feature of life in a big city. The group that was protesting Congolese politics was much better behaved than the G20 protestors - at least while they were walking down Queen Street.

Many years ago, decades ago even, I was a young student living away from home for the very first time. Because I was by nature a shy and retiring sort, I spent my evenings studying my text books or reading one of the numerous interesting volumes I found whilst exploring the stacks of the university library.

When 9:00 rolled around, I closed the books for an hour so that I could listen to Ideas on the CBC. I'd light a candle, extinguish the fluorescent lights, and lose myself for an hour in a world of new discoveries. At the end of the hours, I'd blow out the candle, turn on my lights, and resume my studies.

I miss those days sometime.

Over the Top

Today is Remembrance Day. Each time I attend the cenotaph ceremonies, my mind thinks of two things: my former neighbour Al, who served in the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II, and the 600,000 Canadians who served in the Great War.
